The Turnip Field Fires

The sky was blue. The air was most warm. The wind was calm. The crocus were in bloom. It was a perfect spring day.

I stayed home from work and Sister #2 and I got busy. We have turnip fields to clear. It's our own brutal logging operation minus the worry of what things land on when they fall.

When the Sisters retire and spend more time on the mountain, there will be more mouths to feed. There is a need for more full sun for fine food production. I'm thinking perennial crops like asparagus, raspberries and plums to go with the turnips too.

The clearing has begun now to prepare for the future.

We stopped to smell the crocus first, then got to work.

Today's primary purpose was to burn up all the rubbish from small trees and tree tops that had been cut in previous visits. That will make getting through the turnip fields easier as the clearing continues. It was decided to save the large log sections and use them for terracing the slopes to make pathways and vegetable beds.

We made good progress, but as you can see, it is still a long way from full sun even in the barren time on a not a cloud in the sky day. Progress, that is the best we can hope for. There are a lot of trees and some of them are huge.

There was fire and it was good. Already it is easier to traverse the space. An area of tidy is taking shape.

It was a fine day for clearing turnip fields. By Sunday morning it will all be covered in snow.
