That Autumn Light

It's Bloom Day

There are a few more days left in the time of vegetation. I see freezes scheduled for Saturday through Tuesday morning. This extra crispy fall is about to get crispier.

Today there are flowers for Bloom Day. I have autumn crocus.

I have a nice patch of the Yellie Mum. All the other mums did not do so well the past two negative digit winters. The Sheffie Mum was engulfed by the Lush. That didn't help either.

One out of five starts of the newest pink mum survived. Now if the cats would just stop doing their business on it. Of course that might make it better next year.

I have some fall color.

And a lot of blue and white asters to go with my fall color, for a few more days anyway.

The native Witch hazel, Hamamelis virginiana is starting to bloom. Weathers depending it could keep blooming into November. Lisa, time to watch your Witch Hazel.

The chimney has blue asters.

And a bit of fall color. Soon the world will be all naked. The time of vegetation is coming to an end.

That is when the mums come in, at the end. I found this one down in the sunny utility meadow. I bet there will be all kind mums to see at Bloom Day headquarters. Stop in. Have a look around a blooming planet.

Fall May Be Broken

It is quite possible I complain about fall being off every year. Then every year I am proven wrong. Fall comes. There is glorious color and all is well. This year I am not so sure. I think we lost some leafage early to the dry spell.

There are quite a few mornings of frost in the extended diagnosis. That may help with the color. It will sure help dry the grasses so they stand better through the winter.

Do you notice anything missing? My mega bright orange 'End of Roadwork' sign is gone, just when it might have fit in.

As long as there are still green leaves, there is hope for good color. There is still a lot of green on the mountains out there along with entire stands of bare naked Tulip Poplars.

The Sisters are coming. I suggested the third week of October. There are three days left to see some real action.

Coming To Its End

I'm afraid the Tall Flower Meadow is down for the count. It is not going to do the full on glory of last year. The show is over for the season. All that's left are remnants. Crushed, even the spectacle of white fuzzy seed heads is pretty much lost. I can start the process to expose the under garden and watch the meadow slowly fade away.

The Kousa Dogwood has started its transformation. It turns much later than the native dogwood.

In the distance, entire mountains begin to blaze.

The Sisters will be arriving at a perfect time for fall. My hope now is that we will have several freezes before any heavy snowfall. I want my grasses to stand for the winter.

In The Blue Period

It has been raining All Day Long Again. These pictures were taken yesterday when it was still a beautiful fall day. It's blue out there.

But there is no getting around the fact that last year's showing of the Tall Flower Meadow was way more better. A few weeks of dry followed by a foot of rain has caused an "I've fallen and will not be standing back up" mixed with a crispy dead and done problem.

It's blue out there and fallen or not I can still find some pretty. Next year it will be better, and different because I have added so much more.

The blue period will be forgotten soon enough. The colors, they are a changing.

Begin Fall

On A Beautiful Day

It starts with coffee and the view from the front porch.

There was scenic along the way.

Scenic enough for two versions of the same scene.

It winds down with yellow mums and blue asters.

There are white asters too.

There are enough white asters for multiple views. This is the same white aster as above.

It is not the same as these white asters. The Frost Aster is in the foreground. The Calico Aster is in back with the teeny tiny flowers by comparison.

The sun was shining. The leaves were turning. The asters are blooming. It was a beautiful day.
