I Don't Know

What it is

But I like it.

Now I do Dipsacus fullonum, Common Teasel.

It is growing as a weed next to the call box at the gate for the Big Fancy House across the street that sits empty all year long. I may take a tour of the Big Fancy Empty House tomorrow.

I think I know something about teasel, but I can't remember what it would be. It looks scary.

Take lots of pictures of the big fancy empty house. Sounds interesting. Is it for sale? Or are you breaking and entering? Cuz that's sorta my department more than yours.

The Teasel is supposed to get up to six feet and I saw it on a Colorado noxious weed list.

I looked up the Carolina Alspice too. A NC university student and now a professor have crossed the eastern, western and Chinese ones to come up with better garden cultivars. Some sites say it spreads by suckers and I have a recollection of the resident gardeners here saying it was a noxious spreader and they regret planting it. Maybe the new breeds won't spread so much.

This would be more trespassing than a B+E, or a good neighbor checking in on the property really.

In Illinois teasel grew in some of the triangular areas formed by exit ramps in prairie areas. It looked great there, especially when the dried stalks raised the seed heads above a skirting of snow.

The name always reminds me of the character Lady Teasel from a long ago production of 'School for Scandal'.
