After The Polar Vortex

There is one small item that needs attention at the house next door when it gets ugly cold. Even set at a low use 45 degrees, the exterior discharge water exhaust line of the furnace can freeze closed, flood the furnace and shut it down.

I have to disconnect the exterior exhaust line before the cold and empty the bucket of water it fills. When the cold is over, the drip can go back outside. I usually walk next door, rubbernecking along the way.

To be honest, it wasn't much of a polar plunge. The low was only twelve. It was the wind that made things ugly. It isn't lingering either. We went right back to a high of forty with the week ahead trending to sixty - in February.

The chimney was looking very fetching after the vortex.

On the second day of warm with a bit more sun, the witches were coming back out.

Good that you got that chore done before the cold. Love those witches.

What plant is that in pic 1? It looks similar to a native bamboo that grows down at the lake. It never gets any taller than the way that plant looks.

Ha! I was outside with a hair dryer at 0430 last winter with that very problem. Needless to say I had the line relocated after that. Your witches are looking very fetching.

I love my witches too Lisa. 'Arnold' is coming into full bloom this morning.

Yes that is a bamboo Sallysmom. I can only guess the species since my dad bought and planted it long time ago.

Beverly I think making a good furnace drain is a yankee skill that was lacking in my southern father's repertoire. Plus they just shut it all down and left for the winter. I'm of the opinion that letting the house freeze is a bad idea.
