The Scarecrow

Somewhere in this pile of leftovers is some Garden Whimsy for Gardening Gone Wild's design workshop this month.

I had an idea yesterday for the vegetable garden and decided to strike while the whimsy had me.

I needed something big and scary to shoo away any potential unwanted diners from my roadside produce stand.

A good set of eyes to watch over the vegetables seemed like a good idea. Like those plastic owls people set out to scare critters, but bigger, better, more outlandish.

A little bright shiny motion could be added for more deterrent effect.

Add a pair of long legs to raise it high over the meadow wildflowers.

Are you scared yet?

Let's get a closer to look at this thing.

Boo!

I now have fresh garden whimsy.

Ooo Ooo, I was temporarily frightened there. Then I realized what a work of art it is. Very good Clyde.

I also see a few bird houses in that pile of left overs. Possibly a bench or two to set along a trail.

I LOVE IT!!! You are so creative! That is the cutest .... um I mean...scariest scare crow I have ever seen. Do you ever get folks pulling into your driveway to check and see what is over those beautiful wild flowers? I bet if they don't stop they sure are wishing they could. You can go into business selling "yard art"!

HA, fresh whimsy served while it's hot! What is his name? He has a slight resemblence to the owl family, with a hair issue, hope he frightens potential diners. Maybe he needs some hanging shiny things for more movement?

Lisa I think you are right. All kinds of things lurk in the leftover lumber. I'm thinking a compost bin.

Thanks Siria. As a matter of fact while I was digging the postholes for the scarecrow a young couple turned around and came back to chat. The scarecrow was still in my truck so it was the garden that caught their eye.

Frances, do you see a pair of dangling ear rings perhaps. What style? I'll think on that. The scarecrow is nameless at this point. Somehting else to think on.

Earrings? Have to be large hoops, so of the moment.

Hoop earrings ya think. I was leaning more towards silver glittery twirly disco ball earrings that might flash and blind potential diners.

None of this will do any good for the fatal bacterial wilt I have found in three of the cucumber vines. There are plenty more so it should be fine.

Fabulous whimsy! Geez, I feel inspired to create my own whimsy. And a little embarrassed that I haven't already.

If people think they have a chance to buy one maybe they'll be less likely to steal it? It's great, Christopher.

Nice! Kinda reminds me of those kokopelli characters...on acid! ;-) I agree with Lisa, I think birdhouses want to crawl out of that pile next...

I love your scarecrow, but you've placed me in the middle of a dilemma. Which first for MY garden? Scarecrow or blue bottle tree? That scarecrow is awfully tempting - it's wonderful. And are those "hair" movement things the straps that come on lumber and big boxes?

Christopher C. NC said...

Lisa I can see a kokopelli resemblance.

Kim, that is exactly what the hair is made of, big metal straps from delivered lumber.

I have been away too long - look at everything! Wow. That scarecrow is simply wonderful. Perfect! But those flowers - and your vegetable garden - how nice your piece of land must be.

It's been nice that we have been getting rain - after last year's drought here along the east coast (I'm not sure how dry folks were there last year) - but the monsoons have been very much welcomed.

Great! Sometimes all we need is a REASON to get creative! ;-)

That is so much better than a plastic owl. Even if it doesn't do the job, it's still fun to look at. I admire you're instant whimsy ability.
