I stopped by Christopher Mello's garden when I went to Asheville the other day. One of the sedges I think, perhaps a grass, stands at the tail end of winter.
A rather tall grass, possibly Saccharum ravennae, also remains standing. It forms a wispy see through fence and acts as a back drop to the larger garden.
Most of the plants were still sleeping and the garden was very much alive.

Grasses look good. Boy, a lot of shovels.
Christopher is a man after my own heart ... he loves rusty stuff!
