Daffodils Before The Storm

In the garden of Bulbarella Stinze the bulbs were rising in many days of warm spring.

Currently it is 16 degrees with a steady snow, brisk wind and about two inches of accumulation on the ground.

Tomorrow morning's low will be 10 degrees or below.

Will the daffodils survive the storm?

One can only hope so. Daffodils can and literally do freeze when things go wrong.

The garden of Bulbarella Stinze is now covered in snow.

Thousands of perfect daffodils were getting ready to burst into a massive bloom.

What will be left when the snow melts and the days of warm spring return?

The stinze will go on. There is plenty of backup. Abundance may be compromised and perfection will be lost.

We saw the daffodils when things were perfect before a bitter cold winter storm.

The latest expansion of the garden into the Turnip Fields has already been packed with more bulbs. Its north facing slope slows the warming of the soil and the rise of the bulbs. A late rising can have many benefits on the mountain top.

That pile of dirt in the top center is the property line. The roadbed on the other side was raised a good three feet for the logging underway. The rickety barbed wire fence got knocked down. It's a bit of mess, but gardeners are always happy with more sun.

And before a wicked winter storm, the Iris reticulata were in bloom.
