The Witches In The Snowpack

It seems it has been a decade since the last winter with any kind of snowpack. Another two to four inches is scheduled for tonight. Snow pack or not, there was a chance to get out in the calm between snows. Time for a walk. Get up. Get moving. Stretch that piriformis. The witches are out.

Click on a picture for the slide show. Let's go for a walk in the snow.

Thanks Uwharrie. I look forward to their bloom every year too. There may be a few days of sun and warmish this week that will really make them pop.

Hello Christopher: Hope you are well. We got one hour and six minutes of snow. Gone before the day was over. Your witches have such beautiful structure. Have you ever pruned them? I have since determined that I have Hamamelis virginiana on the edge of our woods. Doesn't reliably flower as the squirrels eat the flower clusters. I'll enjoy yours. Gypsy

Hi Gypsy. No I have never pruned the witch hazels. I am considering it currently. Not so much to prune them as to tip a few of them a bit to see if they will bush out and get a little fuller. All these grafted H. x intermedia started as small one gallon second year grafts and I have just let them be. They are very prone to sending up suckers from the root stock so those get cut off annually. I have a nice grove of the native H. virginiana. They bloom Oct and Nov and the bloom can vary from sparse to very full.
