A Lump In The Leaves

Another morning was spent roaming the ridge top garden checking on the progress of the extravaganza in waiting.

The green clumps of bulbs are becoming ever more apparent.

It was pointed out to me that many clumps still laid buried beneath the lumps in the leaves. A leaf dispersal process was initiated and well upwards of another 50 clumps of bulbs were revealed.

I would have to say we have passed the 500 mark of clumps of Daffodil foliage.

The small Narcissus minor var. pumilus 'Rip Van Winkle' is another early bloomer.

A hillside is splattered with lumps in the leaves.

A Trumpet Daffodil 'King Alfred".

Will it snow this weekend or just rain? Do the Daffodils care? I have been told assuredly that the peak of bloom should be around the second week of April, almost a month away.

Over 500 clumps of daffodils? That is going to be quite the display. I don't think they'll be bothered by snow, by the way.

You're learning all their names!

I'm wondering whether you treasure flowers more in North Carolina, having been deprived of them all winter, than when you were surrounded by flowers all year in Hawaii. Do you find that you have a different reaction as a seasonal gardener than as a tropical gardener? I'd love to read a post about that.

So many lumps in the leaves, it makes the heart race. I'm glad you are learning the names also, so we can look for them for our gardens. Rip Van Winkle is great!

Carol, this potential display is more than I could have imagined. Hearing about it over the years is kind of like the gardeners version of the Big Fish that got away.

Don't take my names as an authority. Naming the Daffodils is my best deduction from catalog descriptions and asking the resident gardeners best guess. They are not overly concerned by botanical names. Pretty is far more important.

Pam, I'll think on that and see if I can come up with some thoughts.

Francis I bet you know more than me with your years of experience in this zone.

I'm jealous of your 'Rip Van Winkle'...I have been wanting that one. Now I MUST buy it this fall! Heh...if those bulbs were martians, I'd say we're fully invaded!
