Bulb Activity

It was 28 degrees this morning with a hard frost that turned into a beautiful, sunny, 50 degree day, perfect weathers for bulbs. The ridge top garden is really beginning to stir.



I saw these daffodils in my travels today. They are bit further along and about ready to pop compared to any of the daffodils up here high on the low spot.



The ridge top garden is not about to be showed up though. The early arrivals of the bulb world are starting to bloom.



The helleborus are even getting into the act.

There is actually a chance of snow in the diagnosis for tomorrow. By Saturday actual winter like cold is set to arrive and stay for a few days. This is cold in the 20/40 range, not cold enough to have the slightest worries about the bulbs. It might even do some good and get spring back on a more normal schedule.



I also saw a spirea and a viburnum trying to bud out in my travels today. Those are the kinds of things that will not like this kind of cold. Hopefully they weren't too far along.

The first of the crocus have arrived on the mountain top. They are definitely showing up earlier than last year. Hopefully the coming cold will put them into suspended animation. But if it stays mostly sunny, this tepid attempt at cold may not be enough to keep the crocus quiet.



A few of the daffodils here are showing a little bud. Bulbarella has planted varieties that span the very first to the very last to bloom so you can't tell much about this winter that wasn't from this.



If she keeps up her divide and spread operation with the snowdrops, it won't be too many years before the mountain is covered with them as a prelude to the Bulbapaloozathon. Oh poor me. I'll be the only one up here to enjoy it.



If it actually does manage to snow up here tomorrow beyond a few flurries sprinkled into the mix I will be surprised. They've said snow twice now in the last week and changed their minds at the last minute. I'll have to settle for a little cold.
