Where Was I

It could end up being the way it was before. I make myself little promises that it won't be.

You get so busy with the routine of your life that it takes having company to get out there and enjoy the wider world of life that is in your own backyard.

So up to Mt. Pisgah for lunch and a mini-hike I went because company is visiting.

Here is some of what was blooming on the short trail to the watch tower on Frying Pan Mountain.

Goat's Beard, Aruncus dioicus.

Nice fern grouping. I will need to organize my ferns for this effect.

Milkweed, Asclepias not in my book weed.

Speckled Wood Lily, Clintonia umbellulata.

Fly Poison I believe, Amianthium muscaetoxicum, about to bloom. I may be needing seed of this later in the year. Perhaps we will have company in the fall.

The Mountain Laurel and plenty of the Flame Azalea were blooming. This is the Pinxterflower, Rhododendron periclymenoides.

Way off in the distance in this not so great picture is a monumental slab of stone. It has a name no doubt. I should probably know it. Perhaps this is Looking Glass Rock.

And down towards the bottom of this pluton monolith of granite is Sliding Rock.

I think I know that kid.

Then it was time to head back home to the top of another mountain,

Where the front yard makes for a legitimate excuse for not being in much of a hurry to wander off to the backyard.

Christopher,
Your milkweed is Poke Milkweed, asclepia exaltata very common in the higher elevations in the NC mtns. I think it can also hybrid with Common Milkweed too.

I know that feeling of never enjoying your external surroundings due to getting involved in your home work. My kayak sits and rebukes me every day while I work in the garden.

I believe I spy the wild sweet potato vine, Diascorea (?sp) (forgot the species) in those heart shaped leaves under the milkweed. It is all over my woods so I stole a couple; flowers insignificant but the leaves are a treat.

You are going to try to organize your ferns. Can ferns be organized? Something to ponder...

Hi Christopher! What a gorgeous day for a hike! You should definitely take time to enjoy your company and your surroundings as life is too short. These are fun memories for all to cherish over time. That milkweed is gorgeous. Not at all what my milkweed in Florida looks like.

Is a trip to Cataloochee to see the Elk in store for this week?

We had our honeymoon at Pisgah View Ranch right around where you were. Let me tell you, our travel agent picked this place, it was 7 AM breakfasts on large picnic tables in a big room, 11 AM lunch, 5:30 dinner. We had a cabin w/ o TV or phone, no even remote luxury around us. The surroundings were beautiful, near Ashville, but the romance factor in that honeymoon at a FAMILY resort, was ZIP, Nada, zero, nothing...minus 10. Thanks for bringing me back that memory Mr. Rock identity with a rock hat.

Sliding Rock, I remember that.
So glad you got out for the day to enjoy what is around you. It gives one a new perspective.
Thanks.

Call me a bit of a whimp, but I can not imagine how cold that water must be this early in the season. It would have to be near 100 for me to want to frolic in that stream.

As a child, I went down Sliding Rock many a time. C-c-c-cold! But really fun, especially when you go down the slippery slope in a sitting-down conga line, holding on to the person in front of you for dear life.
