Left Hanging

All this cold and snow has not been the least bit conducive to cozy cabin construction. Unable to wood work outside, it pretty much came to a halt.

A few days without falling snow and some minor melting allowed a resumption of construction. The peak of the ceiling has finally been fastened in to place. The last major gap between interior and exterior has been sealed. This could mean the inside will stay even warmer in the next arctic blast. What could be a worse place to lose hot air than in the very peak of the ceiling.

This also means the mini loft light, main ceiling fan and final wall trim in the mini loft can proceed. Even the bathroom light fixture was delivered today. There are things to do inside now when the weathers turn.

There are a few details to attend to of course. Two of the four and a half inch screws used to attach the beam into the peak actually broke off. They were being drilled through the beam and the tongue and groove ceiling into the 2 x 12 studs that frame the roof. That was a lot of wood to screw through. I think I am just going to cut the broken screw heads shorter and put them back in the holes with glue for aesthetic purposes. Those beams are not going anywhere. They are screwed in good.

And then there is this triangular hole where the beam joins the main loft. That needs to be covered to keep the bats out of the house if they should some how breech the defenses for the roof vents under the eaves and get into the roof. Right now the bats just hang out under the eaves. I don't need them inside the house.

The driveway was finished being shoveled and if all goes well (if the weathers cooperate) the appliances should be delivered on Wednesday. That will give me even more to do inside when the weathers turn again. It's trying to turn now. White frozen stuff was being spit out. It's supposed to turn to rain and snow and sleet and freezing drizzle and snow and rain and all of the above. Now that's a whole lot better than a winter storm warning.

Even with all the snow there is still plenty to keep you busy.
Sure hope those bats stay outside. We use to have them in the attic when I was a kid, but the house we lived in you could count the chickens underneath. lol
Take care, stay warm.

I bet you are itching to get this finished. I can almost feel the finish myself. The Cabin is becoming more cozy all the time. I am sure the bats would love a chance to hibernate there. It is so welcoming.

Christoper,

Sorry about the bolts breaking. Lag bolts under 3/8 inch always break on me too! So I use 3/8 or 1/2 inch just to keep them from breaking while installing.

That ceiling looks beautiful! Can't wait to see your appliances in the cozy cabin kitchen. It will really looked lived in then. I would worry about other creatures besides bats getting into the house through that hole in the rafter. My big problem now is wasps. They are coming in through the kitchen exhaust hood of all places!

Lola the eaves are near exact to how you are supposed to build a bat house. They roost under there and pee down the side of the wall.

Lisa it is so very close. I do want some nice weathers to do the exterior lights. The painting isn't needed for a final inspection so that can wait for spring.

Randy I used 1/4 lag bolts wanting to avoid the Frankenpeak look and my smaller pilot hole drill bit into the 2 x 12 stud wasn't quite long enough. Oh well. It is firmly attached.

Siria I did not have near this amount of aggravation with varmints trying to get in the house in the tropics. A neighbor stopped and chatted a while back to tell me he switched from wood siding to Hardie Plank because the carpenter bees were drilling into his house.

Rats on the bat pee down the wall. That wouldn't work at all. Seems the varmints are looking for warmth.

Christopher, may I just say that the Datsun tailgate as wall art is totally AWESOME! Very cool indeed. I hope the weather cooperates tomorrow and the appliances are delivered as scheduled.

Yes I had carpenter bees too. Our house is hardie plank siding, but the cieling on our deck is not and that is where they were drilling into the house. We filled in all the holes and haven't had any problems, but we are constantly fighting the bees and wasps! I don't mind the lady bugs and flies so much, but the wasps and bees in the house I do not like! Thank goodness the mice problem is under control. The voles in the garden ... well, that is another problem!
